Importance of Reading Labels

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

The skincare industry is booming. With a range of products to choose from it can be difficult at times to pick the right product for you.

Brands use labels to promote themselves, create consumer awareness, and stand out from other related brands.

It is important to understand what we put on our skin rather than buying products based on attractive packaging. So how often do we make a decision based on the label, content, or ingredients? How knowledgeable are we as consumers?

A label will tell you that:

1. Brands that care for you will create a more informed buyer by ensuring they list out the ingredients used.

2. You will know what ingredients are suitable for you. (hypoallergenic, skin type, free from chemicals).

3. Ingredients are generally listed based on higher to lower concentrations, so if the best ingredients have been mentioned at last you will know that you will get only a minimal of it.

4. Cruelty-free a label that lets you know that products are not tested on animals and a vegan label tells you that the product does not contain any animal-derived ingredients.

5. It tells you if the brand is environment friendly and adopts sustainable ways.

6. Apprises you about the manufacturing date and the product shelf life.

We must base our decisions on the above points.

We should take time to educate ourselves about dominant product ingredients, know what chemicals (niacinamide, retinol, vitamins, tocopherol, etc.) can work wonders or what can deplete the condition of our skin (sulfates, silicones, hydroquinone, phthalates, etc.).

We should also support eco-friendly brands because their products are environmentally safe from the extraction of raw materials to production, consumption, and disposal.
